As well as preventing significant heat loss from residential and commercial properties in cold climates, it is also designed to keep the cool air in during hot weather. Increasing the energy efficiency of a building can also mean reducing bills and operational costs.

We supply a variety of insulation products for flat or pitched roof applications. From steel, concrete or warm roofs to rafter line or loft insulation, ROCKWOOL products are made from premium stone wool to keep your properties safe and the indoor environment comfortable.

On top of the good thermal performance, the fire-resistant and acoustic properties of ROCKWOOL products also allow for more freedom in your designs.

Why do we need roof insulation?

Installing effective insulation in homes and commercial properties can reduce heating requirements by up to 70%.1 Those that are not effectively insulated can lose approximately a quarter of heat through the roof. As well as the warm air escaping, there’s the chance that cold air can also enter through a roof that isn’t in good shape.

In hot climates the opposite can occur, where keeping a building cool is essential.

Insulation helps to maintain the building’s correct temperature, so you can get creative with the results. Turn a loft area into a living space or an extra bedroom, or turn a flat roof into a welcoming terrace or green roof.

Insulating a flat or pitched roof can help:

  • Prevent heat transfer
  • Increase the energy efficiency of a property
  • Save money on heating bills
  • Reduce the carbon footprint of a property
  • Improve summer comfort

Calculator and savings

Every home and business is different. With various sizes and dimensions of flat or pitched roofs, as well as budgets and bills to consider, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

Heating and cooling buildings accounts for 35-60% of total energy demand around the world.2 The savings homes or businesses stand to make by reducing energy bills can more than make up for the costs of roof insulation.

In terms of money that can be saved, energy use and reducing the carbon footprint, installing roofing insulation is well worth the investment.

In addition, the building insulation ROCKWOOL sold in 2019 will save 100 times the carbon emitted in its production over the lifetime of its use.3

ROCKWOOL applications incorporate the latest BIM techniques to determine the required thermal performances for a project. This helps to predict the costs of an individual project, whatever the size and scope. We provide a selection of tools to help you calculate thermal performance – and therefore what costs a project potentially incurs.

Case studies

The project

The remarkable and innovative Zaha Hadid-designed Port House building in Antwerp, Belgium was created as a sustainable workplace for the headquarters of Europe’s second-largest port.

The challenge

Port House required protection against the noise from technical installations on its complex flat roof, as well as effective fire protection to ensure the highest possible safety standards.

The solution

ROCKWOOL stone wool products were installed due to their effective acoustic properties, while ROCKWOOL roof insulation boards used in the building met the highest A1 Fire Class rating.

Our ‘cut to fall’ service also allowed the insulation to be custom-fitted to Port House’s unusual boat-shaped roof – facilitating swift installation and allowing the right angle for draining rainwater from the surface.

The excellent acoustic performance of ROCKWOOL stone wool is an important advantage…the highly detailed cut-to-fall plan [also] helped us a great deal.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Rock is one of the earth’s most abundant, most sustainable resources, and it’s our belief that the clever use of this rich material can help save others from being depleted before it’s too late.

By installing insulation sourced from innovative stone wool, our products can help reduce the amount of energy that needs to be used to heat buildings – and save money on energy bills too.
