Suspended ceiling insulation panels, slabs or rolls can enhance thermal performance, reduce sound transfer and reduce the risk of fire spreading.

Suspended ceilings are normally applied beneath concrete floors. They serve many purposes in commercial and residential properties – covering up pipes and air ducts, creating space for light points and forming an aesthetically pleasing finish.

With effective installation, the gap between this construction and the intermediate floor above can be filled with insulation material – whether you have a wooden or metal frame in place.

A suspended ceiling is in many ways considered an acoustic ceiling made from a metal grid with ceiling tiles. Rockfon provides a full portfolio, which also includes solutions for commercial buildings, where Rockfon ceiling solutions are often used to combine the visual and acoustic aspects.

Why do we need suspended ceiling insulation?

Suspended ceilings offer the opportunity to improve the thermal, acoustic and fire performance of a building – as well as adding design benefits – whether you’re working on a complete new build or a renovation project.

Adding insulation boosts thermal performance by preventing heat or circulated cool air escaping through the ceiling. This helps maintain a consistent room temperature and reduce energy use – at a time when energy consumption is at its highest1.

Suspended acoustic ceiling solutions provide extra advantages by reducing noise transfer from adjacent dwellings in the same building.

Key benefits can include:

  • Reduced heating and cooling costs
  • Improved fire safety
  • Acoustic absorption
  • Visually appealing designs

Calculator and savings

The amount of insulation required depends on the size of the ceiling surface where it will be applied. Calculate the ceiling area to work out how much material you’ll need.

Insulated suspended ceiling panels, slabs and rolls vary in thickness and density. The best size will depend on whether you are prioritising thermal, acoustic or fire performance.

U-value calculator tools and technical support can help you decide the thickness and amount of insulation required. Contact your local ROCKWOOL organisation for assistance with finding the best product and thickness for your needs.

Since our stone wool products are usually placed on a suspended ceiling without additional fixings, they are easy to take out and re-use when dismantling the ceiling. Circularity at its best.

The challenge

Solar Spectrum opened new offices, housed within a 38-year-old concrete tower in central Kansas City, USA. Working with Hoefer Wysocki Architecture, they wanted to open-up the space to create a modern office with exposed steel pipes, ductwork and concrete, while reducing noise with the help of effective acoustic insulation.

The solution

The company chose Rockfon ceiling systems and acoustic islands, positioning them strategically throughout the office. This way the existing ceiling elements they wanted remained exposed – but they were able to bring additional acoustic benefits into the space.

The results

Solar Spectrum’s modern offices have a contemporary and appealing aesthetic. The Rockfon panels reflect external light throughout the office – and reduce noise transfer to neighbouring workers from the floor above.

Rockfon acoustic islands were the best thing available to meet the acoustic design and aesthetic needs, and they included recycled content.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

All ROCKWOOL products are fully recyclable, whether you’re installing a suspended acoustic ceiling to reduce noise transfer, or your priority is creating a fire barrier.

Our slabs, roll and panels are all made from natural stone wool and designed to last the lifetime of any building3. At the end of a building’s lifetime, ROCKWOOL insulation can be removed and indefinitely recycled.
