Acoustic Ceiling Insulation

Acoustic ceiling insulation is an important consideration for many new builds and renovations – where reducing sound transfer between adjacent spaces helps enrich modern living.

Within a building, it can protect apartments and offices from noise above, as well as insulating those that sit above car parks from loud vehicle noise below. It can also limit sound passing to and from converted basements in residential properties.

Often installers create a suspended acoustic ceiling In car park ceiling applications, stone wool slabs are mechanically fixed to the floor or used as loose panel formwork during concrete pouring.

Why do we need acoustic ceiling insulation?

From footsteps to music to vehicle engines, intrusive and disruptive noise can easily travel between apartments, as well as up from underground car parks and basements, in residential and commercial properties.

Severe noise pollution – with regular sound pressure levels between 75 and 80 dB – is common in many countries1. This disturbs sleep and productivity – and can cause adverse health effects.

Effective acoustic ceiling insulation blocks the passage of sound, helping to provide a solution when noise pollution cannot be prevented at the source.

Panels applied to the ceiling, thanks to their high sound-absorbing properties, can contribute to reducing reverberation and noise levels. This can directly improve worker and resident wellbeing, making it easier to hear and understand one another – not to mention important safety messages.

Key benefits can include:

  • Reduced sound transfer
  • Reduced reverberation and noise levels
  • Improved comfort
  • Enhanced room aesthetics
  • Fast and simple installation

Calculator and savings

The amount of insulation required will depend on the surface area of the ceiling. Measuring this should indicate how much material you will need, whether insulating a suspended ceiling or placing material between the ceiling cavities.

The thickness needed also depends on the size of the ceiling cavity or the space between the suspended ceiling and the surface above. Generally, you can find acoustic ceiling panels and slabs and other products between 50 to 100mm thick.

Properly installed, effective insulation can also lead to energy savings by limiting heat as well as sound transfer.

Use our ROCKWOOL RT60 Calculator to determine the acoustic performance of the building’s ceiling, and estimate the acoustic delay value (echo). For more details on technical specifications, visit our ROCKSPEC Specification Toolkit.

Case studies

The challenge

The Landmark is a new office building development in Bucharest, Romania, designed to combine an attractive location with modern comfort. Based in a noisy city centre, it needed to offer corporate tenants a comfortable, safe and quiet working environment.

The solution

ROCKWOOL insulation was installed in the ceilings of the building’s underground car park. This was to protect the offices above against noise – as well as fire risks and temperature loss.

The results

Investor Alecsandri Estates were able to achieve their goal of building an attractive office block in the city that offers a comfortable internal environment. The Landmark achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating3.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

All ROCKWOOL products are made from stone wool, which is highly sustainable as it can be recycled indefinitely5.

ROCKWOOL insulation is designed to last the lifetime of a building, with its performance remaining unchanged. This avoids the use of extra energy to produce and install new products – and prevents the creation of waste as there will be no need to replace them.
