When we renovate and modernise our buildings, we do more than just cut energy waste: we create skilled jobs, strengthen small businesses, and scale European manufacturing and innovation.

Done at pace and at scale, renovation becomes a growth strategy with immediate impact. It can deliver fast economic stimulus because work happens locally and supply chains run deep through regional economies. Small and medium-sized enterprises comprise almost the entire European construction sector, so when building renovation takes place, it creates local jobs. In fact, for every 1 MEUR invested in building renovations, 18 jobs are created on average1.

Energy efficiency powers a new chapter of European growth

The EU's industry for efficient buildings currently generates approximately €850 billion in annual turnover and supports 6.5 million jobs. Today Europe benefits from a strong, well-established local manufacturing base, particularly within the building material and insulation sectors.

With this foundation, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) holds the potential to catalyse an established industry and support Europe in growing its economy, strengthening its workforce, and cementing its position as a global leader in the buildings of tomorrow.
