Insulated Metal Panels using ROCKWOOL Stone Wool provide superior protection and comfort to industrial facilities In Marshall County, Mississippi, ROCKWOOL has built a new 600,000 square foot production facility. The stateof- the-art factory created 150 jobs and represents a $160 million corporate investment. The factory required 240,000 square feet of insulated metal panels for the exterior walls. When ROCKWOOL embarked on this project, it needed to practice what it preached and specify the right building materials. Who better to take on the project than one of our very own customers? Metl-Span was the chosen manufacturer of insulated panels which use ROCKWOOL stone wool as the core. More specifically, Metl-Span’s ThermalSafe® Fire Resistant Insulated Panel was the specified product for this project. The 4” and 7” panels carry a 1 hour and a 2 hour fire rating, respectively.

The stone wool insulation within Metl-Span panels is ROCKWOOL CONROCK® a rigid, stone wool insulation board with excellent fire resistance and thermal properties. It is designed specifically for metal panel systems and is typically used in exterior wall applications. When specified as the core for a panel system, CONROCK becomes a prefabricated OEM solution, providing faster build schedules, occupant safety with outstanding fire ratings and energy savings.

Metl-Span’s ThermalSafe® panels consist of metal facings bonded to a stone wool core to create composite panels that achieve fire ratings under the most demanding conditions. The panels are made from raw materials that are environmentally friendly and have no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that affect the ozone layer or add to global warming potential.

The panels contain an interlocking side joint feature called LockGuard® which allows for quick and easy installation. This patented technology eliminates the need for a spline to be inserted to connect 2 panels together which is a very labor-intensive and time consuming operation.

Benefits of using ROCKWOOL CONROCK® in Insulated Metal Panels

ROCKWOOL CONROCK® has excellent fire resistance properties allowing the metal panels to meet the necessary fire ratings. CONROCK is non-combustible with a melting point of 2150°F and does not develop smoke or promote flame spread when exposed to fire, which will better protect the personnel and equipment located in the facility. In addition, CONROCK has a dense, rigid structure allowing for easy handling and assembly. Other features and benefits include water repellency and strong acoustical properties.

Metl-Span ThermalSafe® panels can be installed quickly due to the LockGuard technology, drastically reducing labor costs on site. It also provides good thermal performance and protection from the elements in addition to holding fire resistance ratings. The mineral wool core provides superior sound transmission acoustical properties and is dimensionally stable, water repellent and will not expand. This results in Metl-Span ThermalSafe® panels using ROCKWOOL CONROCK® as the insulation media being a unique, industry leading solution that provides superior protection and comfort for industrial and commercial facilities.
