The buildings we trust with our lives
Our homes, schools, day-care centres, hospitals, recreational facilities, and workplaces have incredible importance and impact on our lives. If not designed or constructed properly, they can also pose a risk that you probably don’t think much about – fire safety.
When the buildings in which we live, learn, work, play, and recover get built or renovated, someone chooses the materials to use. Especially for materials like insulation or exterior façade cladding that are part of the building envelope, a key factor in fire safety boils down to a simple question: will it burn?
The good news lies in what we already know – and it’s not complicated. Non-combustible insulation and cladding don’t burn and therefore can reduce the risk of a fire spreading. Combustible alternatives, by contrast, add fuel to a fire and can contribute to its spread – a critical distinction when lives are at stake. The fact is that non-combustible materials like stone wool insulation don’t burn. And because it can withstand temperatures up to 1,000° C, stone wool insulation can also help slow a fire’s spread, making it a resilient choice.
