The project

The Grange University Hospital is a new £350m hospital in Cwmbran, Wales. This state-of -the-art facility forms part of a wider strategic plan which will see Aneurin Bevan Health Board significantly modernise its health service provision.

Originally known as the Specialist Critical Care Centre, the 471-bed facility will bring together more than 40 complex and more acute services onto one site and serve over 600,000 people per year.

The site is expected to be operational in November 2020, much earlier than a previously announced date of 2021. This is due to construction programmes being accelerated to ensure the facility could be partially opened as a Nightingale (COVID-19) Hospital, if needed.

Playing an instrumental role in helping to deliver a modern and compliant healthcare development, ROCKWOOL provided non-combustible insulation for the building envelope and certified firestopping solutions throughout the scheme.

Insulating the building envelope

After the façade insulation was upgraded to a non-combustible specification, ROCKWOOL supported Central Roofing South Wales Ltd with meeting this design change and achieving regulation compliance in the flat roof compartmentation construction.

“The Grange University Hospital is one of the largest projects we have delivered as a business. It proved a critical success factor that we could continue constructing the façade without having to protect the insulation as this saved us valuable time on-site – enabling us to complete ahead of schedule,”

Find out what else Tony Davies, Managing Director, Central Roofing South Wales, had to say about the benefits of working with ROCKWOOL.

Stopping the spread of fire

A typical hospital will have between 20,000 and 40,000 firestops. At Grange University Hospital, approximately 25,000 penetration seals were installed using certified products from the ROCKWOOL FIREPRO® Range.

Learn more about the support ROCKWOOL provided main contractor, Laing O’Rourke and approved FIREPRO® contractor, Optimum – from designing the fire strategy with standard firestopping details through to accessing engineering judgements to ensure the accurate application of FIREPRO® products.

Hear Andy Newton, Firestopping Manager at Laing O’Rourke, explain more about the role ROCKWOOL played in delivering a robust passive fire protection installation.
