SailGP today announced that it will visit Denmark for the first time, as the global sailing league confirms Season 2 will include a stop in the city of Aarhus on 20-21 August 2021.
ROCKWOOL will be the Title Partner for the event – which will feature Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL, racing in front of a home crowd.
The SailGP series features the world’s best sailors, testing their skills on state-of-the-art, foiling boats capable of reaching speeds more than 100 km/hr.
The ROCKWOOL Denmark SailGP event in Aarhus is the fourth event to be confirmed for SailGP Season 2, following earlier confirmations of events scheduled for San Francisco, New York and Plymouth, England. Additional venues will be announced in the coming months.
“ROCKWOOL is delighted that SailGP will visit Denmark in 2021, and proud to be supporting the Denmark SailGP Team as it prepares to compete in Season 2”, says ROCKWOOL Group CEO Jens Birgersson.
He continues: “ROCKWOOL is a proud Danish company, and SailGP gives us the opportunity to communicate about the things we feel strongly about – sustainability, teamwork, innovation and inspiring people to lead healthier, more active lives. The city of Aarhus is a fantastic showcase for those values”.
Over the last year Aarhus has made a name for itself on the international events scene, and boasts the new Aarhus International Sailing Centre as the jewel of the city’s recently redeveloped harbour area. In 2018, Aarhus hosted the Hempel Sailing World Championships as part of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Nicolai Sehested, helmsman of Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL, says: “We’re looking forward to an unforgettable home event in Season 2. The support we’ve had from the whole of Denmark since we entered SailGP last year has been immense, and we can’t wait to fly the flag in front of a Danish crowd”.
In addition to its rich sporting and sailing history in the country, Denmark’s strong reputation for sustainability aligns with ROCKWOOL and SailGP’s goals and makes it an ideal venue for the global championship.
In 2019, Denmark topped the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Index – the global indicator framework that both ROCKWOOL and SailGP are committed to.
“Aarhus is a modern, youthful, green city that excels at hosting sustainable events, and will provide an extraordinary backdrop for our first Northern European event," says SailGP CEO, Sir Russell Coutts. "SailGP features the best athletes in the sport, and with ROCKWOOL Aarhus SailGP positioned in the middle of our season, many of our stars will be returning from the Olympics looking to further amplify the national rivalries on the world’s fastest boats. It will no doubt be some of the most exciting racing of the year”.
Aarhus Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard says: “Aarhus is excited to host a Danish SailGP event in August 2021. The Bay of Aarhus, surrounding the event area at Aarhus Ø, will be the venue for the fastest sail race boats in the world. We are looking forward to welcoming the international teams in our city”.
Season 2 of SailGP will begin in San Francisco, USA in April 2021. More information on tickets will be available shortly.
