HVAC insulation can be used in these systems across large-scale commercial and residential properties, including high-rise offices, apartment blocks, airports, hospitals, warehouse and other industrial facilities, ensuring a comfortable living environment.

Effective insulation is essential for maintaining the correct operating temperature for the different parts of a system – from piping to central heating and air conditioning insulation. As these properties use a lot of energy to create a comfortable climate, working as efficiently as possible is vital.

Find out more about insulation for HVAC systems, and how ROCKWOOL solutions can improve the energy efficiency of your construction.

Why do we need HVAC insulation?

Insulating HVAC systems improves efficiency, reduces carbon emissions and cuts operating costs. It helps keep indoor temperatures stable with minimum energy consumption – forming a comfortable living environment for workers and occupants.

In addition, heating and cooling systems in large buildings can be incredibly loud, so insulating them also improves acoustic performance – and reduces disturbance from unwanted noise as well.

Meanwhile, the excess heat they produce could pose a fire risk, so proper insulation adds another layer of vital protection.

HVAC insulation can be applied to new buildings and renovations. In many countries, it can ensure engineering companies, architects, contractors and installers remain compliant with local energy and safety standards.

Key benefits of ROCKWOOL applications include:

  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Reduced noise pollution
  • Fire protection

Calculator and savings

According to research, insulating cold pipes can lead to energy savings of up to 50 percent, while for hot pipes savings can go up to 20 percent This reduces operating costs and energy consumption, presenting a return on investment – usually within three years.

The optimal insulation thickness is determined by the operating temperature of the HVAC unit, median temperature of the piping or duct, environmental conditions and any additional measurements (such as Legionella prevention or desired energy performance).

Professional installers understand the impact of humidity and temperature, and can assess new or existing properties to advise on which insulation thickness should be applied. Contact your local ROCKWOOL office for tailored help and advice.

The challenge

The Grand Tower in Frankfurt is Germany’s tallest residential block, designed for premium urban living. The project’s insulation experts, Kramer Dämmtechnik, required a solution to keep people living there comfortable during both heatwaves and cooler periods.

The solution

The team from Kramer Dämmtechnik learned about a new ROCKWOOL cold insulation system. They found the system clean and intuitive to work with, and were impressed by the reinforced aluminium tape used to seal the joints rather than highly flammable liquid adhesives.

ROCKWOOL insulation was installed to protect more than 22,000 metres of piping – including air conditioning insulation, heating, and hot and cold drinking water pipes – as well as approximately 250m² of sewer surfaces.

The results

Our system offered the flexibility and ease of installation Kramer Dämmtechnik required, while reliably meeting fire protection requirements. The natural durability of stone wool means the inhabitants of The Grand Tower will stay cool in summer and warm in winter for many seasons to come.

We recommend the ROCKWOOL system for cold insulation. As a tested, non-combustible system, it can even be used openly in escape and rescue routes. It saved us an entire work step and made the installation much faster.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

All ROCKWOOL HVAC insulation material is fully recyclable – whether it’s for piping, air conditioning or heating systems. Our products can be easily removed from a building if it is being demolished and recycled back into new products, preventing a significant amount of landfill3.
