Environmental Impacts

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardized documents for disclosing the environmental impacts of a product for its entire lifecycle. They are developed in accordance with specific product category rules (PCRs) defining the scope of the lifecycle assessment (LCA) conducted and the impacts that must be evaluated and reported.

ROCKWOOL has a product-specific Type III EPD, third-party developed and verified by UL in accordance with ISO 14025 for North America. The values indicated are a weighted average for all North American factory locations, for the declared functional unit, and using scale factors to determine the impact for individual products within the ROCKWOOL North America product portfolio.

Material Ingredient Disclosure

Health Product Declarations (HPDs)

Health Product Declarations (HPDs) are a standard method of disclosing all ingredients in a material and their associated health risks.

ROCKWOOL HPDs cover unfaced and faced products, with a disclosure level of 100ppm.

DECLARE

Declare is a voluntary self-disclosure product labelling program that promotes healthy building materials through product transparency and ingredient disclosure. Headed by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), Declare is linked to the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List Imperative.

Red List Free Declare label:

  • Stone wool, interior products, no added formaldehyde: AFB® evo

Red List Approved Declare labels:

  • Stone wool, interior products, unfaced: AFB®, Comfortbatt®, Rockboard®, Safe’n’Sound®
  • Stone wool, exterior products, unfaced: Cavityrock®, Comfortboard®, Curtainrock®, Frontrock™, ROXUL Safe®
  • Stone wool, exterior products, faced: Smartrock®

A Declare product label discloses all product ingredients and added substances to 100 parts per million (ppm). A products compliance to the Red List Imperative are represented by the following Declaration Statuses:

  1. LBC Red List Free, which means that the product is free of all red list ingredients;
  2. LBC Red List Approved, which means that the product meets the imperative requirements with one or more program exceptions and may contain some Red List chemicals;
  3. Declared, which means that the product is not compliant with the Red List or its temporary exceptions.

The LBC Red List, developed by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), designates chemicals that may not be included in materials used in construction that seeks to meet the criteria of the Living Building Challenge (LBC). Visit Living Future for more information.

UL Environment Formaldehyde Free Environmental Claim Validation

All organic materials will emit small amounts of formaldehyde – even if none is intentionally added. This is also the case for mineral and glass wool insulation and all alternatives containing organic material such as cellulose, straw etc.

ROCKWOOL AFB® evo is manufactured with a non-added formaldehyde binder.

To support our claim, ROCKWOOL has achieved the UL Environment’s (ULE) Formaldehyde Free Environmental Claim Validation.

For a product or material to be verified as formaldehyde free, product samples must have a measured formaldehyde emission comparable to, or below, typical outdoor air concentrations. This demonstrates that formaldehyde exposure from products labelled as formaldehyde free will not contribute airborne formaldehyde at a level greater than found in the natural outdoor environment.

The manufacturer also maintains a formalized manufacturing quality system and attests that there is

  1. No added formaldehyde,
  2. No known added formaldehyde precursors,
  3. No added formaldehyde polymers, and
  4. That no formation of formaldehyde is expected under typical product usage conditions.

USDA BioPreferred Program Certification

The USDA BioPreferred® Voluntary Labelling Initiative allows for consumers to easily identify biobased products. Biobased products are commercial or industrial products (aside from food or feed) that is composed, in whole or in significant part, of biological products.

ROCKWOOL Comfortbatt®, Safe’n’Sound®, AFB®, and AFB® evo are USDA Certified Biobased and are listed in the BioPreferred Catalog

Indoor Environmental Quality

UL GREENGUARD Certification Program

GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold certification are standardized methods for evaluating the VOC emissions of a product. By selecting low-emitting products with GREENGUARD Certification, you are creating a healthier indoor environment for your home, office or institution.

GREENGUARD Gold certification includes stringent limits on emissions of more than 360 VOCs, incorporating health based emissions requirements as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of California Department of Public Health’s Section 01350, among others. Certified products are recognized by more than 400 green building codes, standards, guidelines, procurement policies and rating systems.

Currently, all ROCKWOOL North America stone wool insulation designed for the use within interior environments are certified under the UL GREENGUARD Certification Program and are audited regularly by UL Environment in order to maintain their certification status.

Manufacturer's Declaration of Product Compliance with VOC Emissions Testing

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Standard Method for Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, version 1.2-2017 (CDPH Standard Method v1.2-2017) is widely referenced by green building standards and sustainable materials frameworks to demonstrate compliance with volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions limits. For example, it meets the requirements of the LEED v4/4.1 EQ credit: Low-Emitting Materials.

Although not designed for interior use, several ROCKWOOL products designed for exterior wall applications have been evaluated and comply with the CDPH Standard Method v1.2- 2017, Section 4, for specified scenarios.
