Circularity is not only an important issue from an environmental perspective, but also economically. The use of circular stone wool elements as an infiltration system for rainwater is making a significant contribution.

Circular use of a natural product

Stone wool can be recycled infinitely, without loss of quality. Rockflow stone wool elements consist of approximately 50% recycled stone wool products. The remainder is derived from a natural material: basalt rock. Basalt is an inexhaustible raw material. The earth (more than) replenishes its supply every year. Basalt is extracted in the immediate vicinity of the ROCKWOOL production plants. 

Sustainability in figures

An independent lifecycle analysis (LCA) for Rockflow also shows that its environmental impact is very low over the entire life cycle of the product (from cradle to recycling).

A circular future with Rockcycle

More than 30 years ago ROCKWOOL started recycling stone wool. Used stone wool components and other waste products from the building industry are processed into raw materials for new stone wool products.

  • Rockflow products consist of up to 50% recycled materials;
  • Rockflow has a long lifetime;
  • Rockwool is fully recyclable without loss of quality;
  • Rockwool products are easy to disassemble and separate;
  • Basalt is an inexhaustible raw material: every year the earth produces 38,000 times more of this volcanic rock than is used for the production of stone wool.

Safe for the soil

Rockflow is safe for underground applications and does not cause any soil contamination. The materials in a Rockflow system meet the requirements of
Dutch Soil Quality legislation (BBK) set by Bodem+, part of Rijkswaterstaat, the executive of policies and regulations of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the
Environment.

Going the extra mile

As part of the ROCKWOOL Group we are committed to the principle of sustainability and have a strong track record in this area. We are constantly working to reduce our own production CO2 emissions. We are working towards a rapid conversion to renewable energy sources. In addition, we are actively working on reducing the CO2 emissions associated with the use of our products.
