For Roofs, Hybrid can Mean High Performance

December 28, 2017

Hybrid roof systems combine the benefits of multiple types of insulation to create a high performance roof system. These roofs can satisfy the design needs of many jobs, while saving time and money through material and labor costs.

Polyisocyanurate conventional roof systems typically require two layers of polyiso and a layer of coverboard to satisfy building code and best practice recommendations. Due to the higher R-value per inch (typically published at R5.7/in at mean 75°F), the polyiso insulation allows for a thinner roof assembly which can reduce costs in the parapets or in re-roof applications.

Utilizing a layer of ROCKWOOL TOPROCK® DD or TOPROCK® DD Plus on top of polyiso can allow for the removal of one layer of the polyiso and the coverboard, reducing the material cost and labor needed on the job. In addition, the attributes of these products allow for a higher performing roof. The dimensional stability of TOPROCK® DD and TOPROCK® DD Plus allows for less gapping occurring between the insulation and for less stress to be placed on the membrane. These products also perform well in hail (rated FM 4470 Class 1 – SH (Severe Hail)) due to the product's dual density characteristics. These allow the load to be spread out throughout the product. Finally, the layer of stone wool will moderate the temperature the polyiso is exposed to, improving its performance and increasing its energy efficiency.

TOPROCK® DD is compatible with most mechanically-fastened membrane systems. TOPROCK® DD Plus is compatible with torch, hot mopped or self-adhered membrane systems and can be adhered to polyiso with most conventional adhesives to satisfy performance requirements.

By combining the two insulating products in one roof system, the overall performance of the roof can be improved in a cost-effective way to satisfy everyone involved in the project.
