Goals

The renovation of public buildings is a result of the Grenelle Environment programme launched by the French government in 2007. The government will realise the great savings potential in public buildings which account for 12 % of the existing building stock.

Thus, the Grenelle Environment programme contains a wide range of goals and measures:

  • By 2010, all new buildings built in France must comply with French low energy standards, i.e. use less than 50 kWh/m2 per year for heating
  • By 2020, all new buildings must be energy positive, i.e. produce more energy than they consume
  • Ban on incandescent light bulbs and single glazing for windows by 2010

In addition to energy efficiency in buildings, the Grenelle Environment programme includes several other initiatives within carbon reduction, urban planning, mobility, transportation, agriculture and biodiversity.
