Germany – top of the class

Germany is once again a step ahead when it comes to supporting energy renovation of the building stock. Recently an extra 1.5 billion euro has been allocated to a new stimulus plan.

For many years the German government has been top of the class when it comes to allocating funds for the energy efficient upgrade of buildings. Yet now, in a time of crisis, it is extending the resources even further by earmarking 1.5 billion euro on the 2009 budget as favourable loans and subsidies for energy renovation of the building stock. This will help both CO2 emission reductions and savings in energy costs, plus extra jobs in the building sector.

Reduces energy consumption by 50%

The renovation plan is being carried out under the CO2 Building Rehabilitation Programme launched in 2001. A recent evaluation of the programme, conducted by the Bremer Energie Institut, shows that it saves half a million euro in heating costs with a 50% energy consumption reduction in the refurbished buildings.

German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee.

“Since 2006 we have been able to renovate 800,000 homes to a higher energy standard through our programme. We want to continue this success,” said the German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee.

Household energy savings from the many renovations will, in 2009 alone, account for some 360 million euro, with German citizens personally benefiting from these savings in their own wallets. Further, according to Tiefensee, almost 220,000 jobs have been secured in medium-sized construction companies since 2006 as a result of the programme.
