Low energy buildings

Low energy buildings indicate buildings that are designed to provide a significantly higher standard of energy efficiency than the minimum required by national building regulations. Typically, a low energy building uses at least 50 % less energy than standard buildings.

According to the EuroAce report “European national strategies to move
towards very low energy buildings” seven EU countries had official definitions of low energy buildings in their building regulations at the beginning of 2008. They are:

  • Austria
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • UK
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany

These definitions make it easier for citizens as well as professional building owners to know what they are buying when they decide on a low energy building design.
