Cooling and solar shading
In order to ensure a good indoor climate in low energy buildings, undesirable overheating of the building must be avoided. Overheating can occur in the strong sun, especially during the summer, in buildings with great internal heat loads and in warm climate zones.
New energy efficient cooling systems like systems cooled by the use of geothermal energy (tubes in the soil) are present on the market and might become standard solutions in the future.
A measure providing solar shading by the use of new types of glass materials is possible. Another option is large eaves designed in a way that let the sun into the building in the winter, time when the sun stands low on the sky and act as sun shades in the summer time, when the sun is high on the sky.
Eaves are one of the measures for solar shading.
