To address these challenges, the EU aims to reduce its CO2 emission by 20 % by the year 2020 compared to the 1990 level.
Since 40 % of the energy consumption in the EU takes place buildings, it is crucial for the EU to energy optimise its 160 million buildings to reach its goal by 2020.
The EU has two key directives to address the building challenge: the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2002/91/EC) and the Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive (2006/32/EC).
