UN Climate Summit 2010
From 30 November to 10th December 2010, the 16th United Nation’s Summit on Climate Change, COP16, will take place in Mexico.
Ministers and officials from 189 countries will meet and hopefully agree on a binding global climate agreement that can succeed the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. According to the UN Climate Panel (IPCC) CO2 emissions must recede within a few years in order to prevent tipping points where climate change intensifies beyond our control. The clock to seal a climate deal is ticking.
Settling an agreement that includes as many countries as possible and that contributes to a substantial reduction of man-made greenhouse gases is vital.
Energy efficiency is needed
India, China and the US have the power to determine whether or not a global agreement will be sealed. These countries have previously been concerned, that commitments to cut CO2 would limit their economic growth. Now, they are experiencing the stronger effects of global warming and a more critical energy supply situation. Therefore, they are aware of the urgency to become much more energy efficient.
